Many people see influencers and creators as the same thing - labels we use and swap out depending on who we chat to, but there is definitely a gap opening up between the two terms as our world of online interactions continue to shape how people shop, trust, research and interact with brands and, each other.
Creators since the TikTok age have become more aligned with entertainment or production of content and its elements - churning out content which brands and other creators can jump on once the algorithm has been created to get in front of new audiences. This content can vary from music and sounds, to dances or video elements to transitions, and can be produced by almost anyone, regardless of your following... You just have to get picked up by an algorithm, or create content that is of a quality for a brand to find you and want it.
Influencers on the other hand are now more closely identified as 'converters': The ones who have a loyal or specific following, and rely on people they influence to buy a product, brand, concept or idea that they're creating content about.
So, which one are you, and can someone be both? Of course, and in today's world there are a welath of spaces to be found, like agencies, and social platforms like Meta and TikTok. The increasing problem, is being easily found amongst the sea of accounts, faces, saturated hashtags and handles.
BoF (Business of Fashion) recently posted that "social media's anything goes reputation, where seeimingly anyone can build an audience & strike lucrative brand deals, is fading."
